SIOUX FALLS, SD - The new director for Second Chance Rescue doesn't dispute the inventory list of dogs revealed in a lawsuit Thursday. The list shows dozens of dogs have become sick or died. Mike Pulizzi says it's sad, and now he's making changes to make sure something like this never happens again.

It's been a vicious dog fight ever since the illegal raid on Dan Christensen's farm and now Second Chance's new interim director admits to KELOLAND News, some of the dogs have gotten sick while in their care, 28 have died.

"The ones that got sick and died were primarily the puppies that were born and unfortunately that's a horrible thing but it happens, but some were dead at birth, some of them died of parvo," Mike Pulizzi said.

Mike Pulizzi had nothing to do with the raid last fall, but he has everything to do with how the dogs are being cared for now. That's why he contacted the state to get information on policies and procedures and retraining for his staff.

"Right now we are having our humane officers going through the swearing in ceremony again even though they are all up to date," Pulizzi said.

Pulizzi says the remaining dogs are being closely watched by veterinarians.

"Anytime a dog gets sick we bring them to a vet or have a vet come in and there are many vets in town that have seen one or two of the dogs," Pulizzi said.

He's also conducting his own internal investigation to find out how something like this could happen.

"I'm constantly talking with the humane officers as well as the rest of the staff, even though they weren't necessarily involved with the legalities of this case, they care and they want to know, I always have my door open and I try to keep everyone up to date as I learn and I'm hoping they are learning too," Pulizzi said.

Pulizzi told me these changes should help prevent other dogs from getting sick or dying.
